In July 1960, Checker performed "The Twist" for the first time in front of a live audience at the Rainbow Club in Wildwood, New Jersey, and just weeks later, on Aug. Exposure for the song on American Bandstand and on The Dick Clark Saturday Night Show helped propel the song to the top of the American charts. Checker's version featured Buddy Savitt on sax and Ellis Tollin on drums, with backing vocals by the Dreamlovers. He settled on Checker, whose voice was very similar to Ballard's. Ballard was unavailable, and Clark searched for a local artist to record the song. When the song proved popular with his audience, Clark attempted to book Ballard to perform on the show. The song became popular on a Baltimore television dance show hosted by local DJ Buddy Deane Deane recommended the song to Dick Clark, host of the national American Bandstand. The song ultimately became the B-side of Hank Ballard and The Midnighters' 1959 single "Teardrops on Your Letter".Ĭhubby Checker version "The Twist" īallard thought "The Twist" was the hit side, but King Records producer Henry Glover preferred the ballad "Teardrops on Your Letter", which he'd written himself. They did not get around to recording the released version until November 11, 1958, when the Midnighters were in Cincinnati. This version appeared on the box set "The Vee-Jay Story" in 1993, but it went unreleased at the time. They originally recorded a loose version of the song in a Florida studio for Vee-Jay Records in early 1958, with slightly different lyrics, featuring Green on guitar playing like Jimmy Reed. Green and Ballard already had written a song together called "Is Your Love for Real", which was based on Clyde McPhatter and The Drifters' 1955 song " What'cha Gonna Do", so they created an entirely new song by simply putting the new Twist words to the older melody. In a 2014 interview with Tom Meros, Midnighters member Lawson Smith claimed that The Gospel Consolaters' Nathaniel Bills wrote the song and initially asked The Spaniels to record it, and that Ballard "stole" the song, falsely claiming authorship. Hank Ballard wrote "The Twist" after seeing teenagers in Tampa, Florida doing the titular dance. In 2014, Billboard magazine declared the song the "biggest hit" of the 1960s. This version reached number 2 in the United Kingdom and number 1 in Germany. In 1988, "The Twist" again became popular due to a new recording of the song by The Fat Boys featuring Chubby Checker. This would not happen for another song for nearly 59 years until December 2020, when Mariah Carey's " All I Want for Christmas Is You" reached the summit after previously topping in another separate chart run in December 2019. Ĭhubby Checker's 1960 cover version of the song reached number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 on September 19, 1960, where it stayed for one week, and setting a record at the time as the only song to reach number 1 in two different hit parade runs when it resurfaced and topped the popular hit parade again for two weeks starting on January 13, 1962. On the US Billboard Hot R&B Sides chart, the original version of "The Twist" first peaked at number sixteen in 1959 and at number six in 1960. Ballard's version was a moderate hit, peaking at number 28 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1960. It was inspired by the twist dance craze. " The Twist" is an American pop song written and originally released in 1958 by Hank Ballard and the Midnighters as a B-side to "Teardrops on Your Letter". If the fuse is blown, replacing it may restore cooling temporarily. If the compressors magnetic clutch is not engaging when the A/C is turned on, the problem may be a blown fuse or a wiring problem. One of the first things you should check, therefore, is compressor engagement. This protects the compressor from possible damage caused by a lack of lubrication. On many systems, the compressor will not turn on if the refrigerant is low because the "low pressure safety switch" prevents the compressor clutch from engaging if system pressure is low. What are other possible causes of the A/C not working. Do you think the A/C control switch assembly is bad? On the control switch when you select A/C the button still lights up as if it were working. It seems like the relay is not getting a power signal when the A/C button is pressed/turned on. Terminal 86 and 87 does not have voltage. When I jump the A/C control relay with a jumper wire the compressor turns on and the a/c blows cold.I checked for voltage at the A/C control relay and at 85 and 30 terminals there is voltage. I have checked the A/C relays and swapped them with same relays. The A/C belt is tight and in good condition. I know the air duct door is working correctly to choose heat or cold.I have checked with a multimeter for power at the compresser, one lead on ground and the other on the plug, I have checked the triple pressure switch and am not getting power to either of them with A/C selected. When I select the switch for A/C the compressor will not turn on. Find out more about our advertising opportunities.I have a problem with my A/C, The A/C compressor is not getting voltage. Because the dealer was Louisiana new car commissioner(1) he keeping me at bay. I was on the road next to a cane field no houses close to me. I was call by Kia, park the car or it will blow up on you. Then, the gas peddle was so hot I could not keep my foot on it. This continue 3 times after, the crank shaft went out, the fuel sensor was the 4 time with me 1 time with the other owner. I paid cash for a Kia 08/09, the engine light came on when it was drop off by the dealership.I call right back I was told to bring it in. It seems as if Kia is not resolving the issue and I don't want to have an accident because of it. My concern is the safety of the vehicle, as I have seen an indication of the same problem with other Kia vehicles on this site & other sites. On 8/21/15 with fred anderson Kia to investigate. The revving worsened, the car attempted to lurch forward even with both the break & emergency break & continued jerking with every gear change. I let the car idle for a few minutes & moved it in & out of gear. I backed into the spot & put the car in park, again jerking. I put the car into reverse to back into a parking spot & the engine started revving dramatically & the car jerked noticeably as it went into gear. On 8/20/15, after approximately 45 minutes of highway driving, I pulled into the parking lot at work. The issue has continued on and off since then. Fred anderson Kia, raleigh, nc investigated this problem on 7/10/15 but was unable to recreate the problem. I have to press the break very hard to keep vehicle from moving forward. Intermittingly, while slowing & stopping at a traffic light, engine begins revving and attempts to lurch forward. Intermittingly, after starting the vehicle, engine begins revving. The diagram below shows the reflected wavefronts and the reflected ray. Upon reaching the barrier placed within the water, these waves bounce off the water and head in a different direction. The blue arrow is called a ray and is drawn perpendicular to the wavefronts. The direction that these wavefronts (straight-line crests) are traveling through the water is represented by the blue arrow. The diagram at the right depicts a series of straight waves approaching a long barrier extending at an angle across the tank of water. These waves will travel through the water until they encounter an obstacle - such as the wall of the tank or an object placed within the water. As viewed on the sheet of paper below the tank, the crests are the dark lines stretching across the paper and the troughs are the bright lines. These straight waves have alternating crests and troughs. If a linear object attached to an oscillator bobs back and forth within the water, it becomes a source of straight waves. Ripple tank demonstrations are commonly done in a Physics class in order to discuss the principles underlying the reflection, refraction, and diffraction of waves. As the waves encounter obstacles in their path, their behavior can be observed by watching the movement of the dark and bright spots on the sheet of paper. As the water waves move through the ripple tank, the dark and bright spots move as well. So the bright spots represent wave troughs and the dark spots represent wave crests. A crest of water will absorb more light than a trough. A portion of light is absorbed by the water as it passes through the tank. A light typically shines upon the water from above and illuminates a white sheet of paper placed directly below the tank. A ripple tank is a large glass-bottomed tank of water that is used to study the behavior of water waves. The study of waves in two dimensions is often done using a ripple tank. But what if the wave is traveling in a two-dimensional medium such as a water wave traveling through ocean water? Or what if the wave is traveling in a three-dimensional medium such as a sound wave or a light wave traveling through air? What types of behaviors can be expected of such two- and three-dimensional waves? Specifically, there will be some reflection off the boundary and some transmission into the new medium. Rather, a wave will undergo certain behaviors when it encounters the end of the medium. The wave doesn't just stop when it reaches the end of the medium. Previously in Lesson 3, the behavior of waves traveling along a rope from a more dense medium to a less dense medium (and vice versa) was discussed. With this theme in mind, the reed beds were constructed using upcycled security screen doors that were earmarked for landfill, rather than using bird netting which is a material consisting of plastic. This year’s World Environment Day theme is #BeatPlasticPollution. The initiative coincided with World Environment Day which is celebrated annually on 5 June and encourages worldwide protection of the environment. LAUNCH TIME: Anchored in the middle of the fish pond at the Marrambidya Wetlands, the reed bed will soon be a safe refuge for native aquatic animals. “However, while they are very young, the seedlings need to be protected from a range of birds that will eat them before they have time to mature, so they will be covered for the time being.” Ms Reid said. “It also helps to improve water quality as the plants act as a kind of water filter. This kind of artificial island provides a place where those problems don’t exist and allows the birds to feel safe. “The native wildlife is under a lot of pressure from feral species, like foxes and cats, as well as unrestrained domestic animals. Wagga Wagga City Council Environmental Education Officer Christina Reid spoke of the benefits reed beds have in local ponds and lagoons to help support the environment. Once established, the plants will provide leaf matter above the bed to support native birds, and roots growing below into the water will become an important habitat for fish and other micro-aquatic critters.įUTURE REFUGE: The reed bed, which was launched at the Marrambidya Wetlands on Monday, will soon be a refuge for native aquatic animals. To highlight World Environment Day, celebrated annually on 5 June, Wagga Wagga City Council worked with students and staff from Mount Austin High School on Monday to create and launch an artificial reed bed which will act as refuge for native wildlife at the Marrambidya Wetland.Ī reed bed is a buoyant framework that is anchored in one of the larger ponds in which native aquatic plant seedlings are planted. They will eat just about any type of food, but prefer grains and meat. Rats can squeeze through gaps as little as 13mm wide and are good climbers. They tend to prefer burrows, but will take up residence in walls, ceilings – in fact any area that provides a “burrow-like” environment. This is why they often live along waterways. Rats require water to drink, more so when they are eating dry foods. In short, rodents are well down the list in popularity contests. Then there are mites, ticks, lice, internal parasites, and fleas – the latter being the vector that transferred the plague from rats to people. Rats and mice are known to carry salmonellosis, leptospirosis, trichinosis, and, in some parts of the world, rabies. In the 1600s about 25 million people died from bubonic plague carried by rats. Then, of course, there is their ability to carry disease. There’s also a pretty good chance they’ll have a fair old chew on winter covers and saddle blankets. Some fire authorities believe up to a quarter of all blazes for which a cause could not be established may have been started by vermin. They can take out your electricity and even cause fires by chewing on power cables. Not only that, but they are likely to chew on your buildings and do damage. If you’re wondering how big the problem is, the US Department of Agriculture estimates more than $US2 billion in feed is destroyed by rodents each year. A rodent is likely to ruin 10 times as much food as it eats, by contaminating it with their urine, droppings, and fur. Spoiler alert: this recipe has more sour cream than flour (insert mind-blown emoji here) which is so weird, right? but it totally works and doesn’t give you that overly-full feeling regular pancakes do sometimes. I made a few tweaks and as I was mixing the batter, I thought there was no way they were going to turn out because it was so different than what I was used to but they magically transformed when cooking and were a big hit! I was intrigued by the recipe, which is very unique, and decided to try making it gluten free. I’m so excited to share my family’s all-time favorite pancake recipe with you! Last year I was browsing the Pioneer Woman’s recipe collection (don’t you just love her?), and found a recipe for her husband’s grandma’s sour cream pancakes. They’re fluffy and taste a lot like a diner pancake, but have a deliciously distinct flavor that will have everyone asking for the recipe. The batter should make roughly a dozen pancakes. These gluten free sour cream pancakes are ridiculously easy to make and 100% foolproof. Serve immediately with a drizzle of warm maple syrup. Flip and cook the pancakes on the other side, for another 1-2 minutes. Cook until bubbles begin to appear, and the underside of the pancake is nicely browned, about 2 minutes. Working in batches, use a ¼ cup measuring cup to scoop the batter for each pancake. Lightly coat a griddle or nonstick skillet with cold butter. Pour butter over the batter and gently stir until the butter is incorporated into the batter. Melt butter in a microwave safe bowl until melted. Pour mixture over the dry ingredients and using a spatula, stir until just combined. In another bowl, whisk together the milk, sour cream, eggs and vanilla. In a large bowl, combine flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda and salt. 1 cup sour cream ( or plain Greek yogurt).Besides they can’t complain for too long, there’s pancakes to eat. I can almost hear my children squirming and rolling their eyes over my sappiness, but I think I’ll just egg them on with some kitchen dancing and snuggling. I figure what better way to celebrate love-day than with a big plate piled high with pancakes. This year for Valentine’s Day, my plan is to make breakfast-for-dinner for my people and these special pancakes are on the menu. If you don’t have sour cream, no problem, plain Greek yogurt works just as well in a pinch. Lightly sweet with a hint of vanilla to balance out the subtle tang of the sour cream, these pancakes will quickly become your go-to recipe. These pancakes are loaded with frozen blueberries we’ve saved from the summer and the texture of the pancake is almost cake-like. I love a little sour cream in the batter for the depth of flavor and the way it helps make the pancakes light and fluffy. I’ve made dozens of recipes for pancakes over the years, but I think these are the best. He flips the pancakes, I pour the orange juice. We have our system down: I mix the batter, he pours the coffee. These days it looks more like shuffling past each other in the early morning hours, slurping coffee, watching the sun rise as our three hungry children (who are unapologetic early risers) wait eagerly for their dad to flip a pancake onto their plate. Marriage, jobs, three awesome kids, too many animals to count, a handful of difficult circumstances and many many wonderful memories later and pancakes still play a central role in our little life together. Did I also mention we were in the middle of the high desert in August? I can say with complete certainty it was one of the hardest and most fun months of my life.įast forward 15 years and that shaggy-haired boy became the man of my dreams. Our jobs were grueling feeding an entire camp of high school students three times a day isn’t for the faint of heart. I noticed right away he outworked everyone around him day in and day out, quick to offer a helping hand whenever it was needed. He convinced me we should steal a golf cart some of the staff used to get around the property (which we never did), he cracked jokes and that shaggy hair was always flopping in his eyes in the most endearing way. He was the resident ‘griddle jockey' and started each morning at 5am making pancakes (as well as French toast, eggs, and bacon among other things) for hundreds of hungry teenagers. I was 21, working in a summer camp kitchen for a month and in charge of 20 or so unruly teenagers, when over the top of the commercial griddle popped a shaggy-haired, hazel-eyed boy with a crooked smile. I fell in love with a boy who was making pancakes hundreds of them actually. A very long time ago I fell in love over pancakes.
